If voters approve the ballot question in November, veterans struggling with PTSD, patients facing terminal illness, and adults dealing with depression, anxiety and other mental health challenges would gain access to new mental health treatment options.
BOSTON, MA, July 2nd, 2024 – A crucial step to bring new and effective care to the Commonwealth, Massachusetts for Mental Health Options announces that they have collected and submitted over 14,000 signatures certified by local election officials to complete their total signature requirement.
“The support from Massachusetts residents has been overwhelming, we are thrilled to be on the ballot this year,” said Emily Oneschuk, US Navy Veteran and Grassroots Outreach Director, MMHO “Massachusetts veterans have been advocating for this care for years, it’s time to make it accessible and affordable for them and other struggling Massachusetts residents.”
The proposed ballot initiative would allow adults 21 years and older to seek regulated access to some natural medicines in licensed therapeutic centers utilizing the potential of natural substances to treat mental health challenges including PTSD, anxiety and depression as shown in cutting-edge research from Johns Hopkins, Harvard, and MGH, among other leading research institutions. The FDA has granted psilocybin, “breakthrough therapy” status for its success with treatment resistant depression.
The campaign’s success comes on the heels of the HERO Act being passed in both the State Senate and House, awaiting resolution in Conference Committee. The act would mandate the study of psychedelic therapies for mental health challenges among veterans. The signature gathering completion illustrates the support Massachusetts citizens have toward mental health options and is one step closer to bringing effective care to Massachusetts veterans, end of life patients, and residents.
